Kingdom Magazine http://www.arnoldpalmer.com/BRANDS/KINGDOM/ 2008-03-31T14:36:43-05:00 Welcome to the tenth edition of Kingdom http://www.arnoldpalmer.com/BRANDS/KINGDOM/ARCHIVE/2008/03/welcome_to_the.aspx Spring is in the air, and what a great season it is. I love this time of year because, in addition to other things, it means it's time for The Masters. This year, as many of you know, marks the 50th anniversary of my first win at Augusta. I'll never forget my 3-wood shot from the middle of the fairway on 13 on the final day that sailed 230 yards to land within 18 feet of the pin. And what an exciting finish. I'm sure the action at this year's Masters will be great, too. I'm delighted to say that I’ll be there once again to kick things off as the Honorary Starter. Maybe I'll see you there.

MICHAEL GRANGE of The Globe and Mail newspaper group was on hand to witness a remarkable couple of days.

The light was just right for memories. The soft yellow morning glow was catching the dew on the grass just so, and if you squinted and cocked your head a little, it could have been 1955 again.

Few sites are as breathtaking as the majesty of the sun casting its brilliant rays on to the sleepy Sonoran Desert in Tucson. Cool darkness gives way to light as the day reveals a stunning landscape where giant saguaro cacti stand in frozen animation and the native wildlife abounds with energy in the foothills of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Designs on the Future http://www.arnoldpalmer.com/BRANDS/KINGDOM/ARCHIVE/2006/03/designs_on_the_2.aspx Palmer Course Design Company reflects on its successes even as it moves forward with plans for new courses we can’t wait to play. READE TILLEY licks his lips in anticipation.

Good design is the foundation for usability and enjoyability in most things, and golf is certainly no exception. A well-designed course pushes our games by providing adequate challenges, but stops short of discouraging us completely by providing adequate rewards as well - some in play, some in aesthetics. Whether in the mountains, ocean-side or on wide-open grasslands, the look of a course is a large part of the experience of a round of golf. Most important of all, a well-designed course is fun to play. No group recognizes all of these factors better than Palmer Course Design Company (PCDC), which has been involved in more than 300 course design projects all over the world since it started more than 30 years ago.

Kingdom editor Paul Trow put the questions to Mr Palmer and his responses, as ever, make fascinating reading.

You have clearly decided your days as a competitor in the majors are over. But I understand that you still have plans to play in Champions Tour events, and the Super-Seniors tournaments? Also, Skins Games?

2,629,440 Minutes and Counting http://www.arnoldpalmer.com/BRANDS/KINGDOM/ARCHIVE/2006/03/2629440_minutes_1.aspx On January 17, The Golf Channel, will celebrate its 10th anniversary. One man who will be there for the party will be co-founding Chairman, Arnold Palmer.

When I first heard about Joe Gibbs’ plans to launch a 24-7 cable network devoted exclusively to golf, I was immediately seized by a number of different emotions. The first one I shared with golf fans all across the nation - sheer excitement at the thought of being able to tune into tournaments wherever they were happening in the world, as they were happening. No longer would I have to endure watching highlight shows or, worse, looking scores up in the newspaper. Next, I felt a sense of foreboding. My wife, I thought, is not going to be happy with this development. I was right. Then I felt a sense of panic. Naturally, I was going to have to buy one extra TV, but I was also thinking of the other places in the house where a small screen would come in handy. So I thought: just how much is this going to cost?
