1954 -- Palmer loses three of the first four holes to fellow finalist Bob Sweeney during the final 36-hole championship, but charges back to win 1-up for the 54th U.S. Amateur Championship. Palmer, to this day, calls the championship his greatest and wrote a book about its pivotal role in his life called, The Turning Point.
